Virginia Tech has announced that they will switch their dual processor G5 towers for the recently announced Xserve G5.
The current supercomputer uses 1,100 PowerMac G5 desktop computers which occupies 280 sq metres. After the upgrade to 1,100 Xserve G5s the system will occupy 1,000 square feet(93 sq metres).
But more important, the new system will take much less power and generate less heat.
I’m curious at which time the Xserve G5 will be in stores. It will take Apple some time to produce 1100 XserveG5′s and I think that the delivery to Virginia Tech will have again a higher priority as less fortunate customers.
